The Akita Inu comes from Japan and was originally bred there mainly as a hunting dog. The FCI classifies the Akita Inu in group 5. This large dog breed has a pronounced hunting instinct, but usually proves to be extremely faithful and loyal to its owner.
The weight of the Akita Inu is usually between 35 and 40 kilograms. The height at the withers should be approximately 67 centimetres in males and 61 centimetres in females, with a tolerance of three centimetres in both directions.
The Akita Inu has a strong physique and a compact head with medium muzzle and pronounced stop. Its tail is bushy and is carried rolled up. The ears of the Akita Inu are slightly rounded, triangular and slightly forward. The eyes are almond-shaped.
The Akita Inu has a hard, straight top coat with a soft and dense undercoat. The coat is either white, red, sesame or tabby, with white markings on the legs, chest, head and underside of tail and belly.
The life expectancy of this race lies between 10 and 15 years.
The Akita Inu is intelligent and is characterized by a strong personality and a strong will.
Due to his dominant nature he likes to make his own decisions instead of blindly obeying his owner. If he gets the necessary attention and is well guided, the Akita Inu is nevertheless extremely loyal and faithful to his master.
Originally the Akita Inu was used as a hunting dog (e.g. for bear hunting) and as a draft and guard dog. This breed still has its distinctive hunting instinct. Owners of an Akita Inu should therefore be prepared to satisfy it in some way. A suitable dog sport would be possible for this purpose.
